Advice for Scouts
So.. you want to walk the path less travelled by? It's not easy, I can promise you that... mostly uphill in fact. Enthusiastic? If you are by the end of your trials I will be impressed. Still want to walk the path? No... there's to be no running.. no jogging.. you must walk it. It will take time.
Alright.. alright.. I can't change your mind now.. I might as well give you a few tips.. call them shallow steps in the pond.
I'll divide the three steps of being a scout into three parts.. the beginning.. middle, and end. Of course the business starts in the middle, but what you do in the beginning determines everything. The end of course is entirely up to you... tred carefully.
First steps as a Ranger hopeful:
----------------------
Contact a Ranger Guide:
First you must pick your victim. They will be listed in the Ranger scroll bought in the Koguryo Library. (( Can also visit www.nexustk.com/list.html for a list of active guides )) Contacting the guide must be done very very cautiously. Some Ranger guides have been noted to be very aggressive when surprised. A good idea is to whisper them and ask "Are you busy at the moment?" If the anwser is yes, ask them "Would it be alright if I sent you a request for guidance to the Ranger path?" With a yes, you are set with a guide. With a no, move on to another guide. If they are not busy present yourself very kindly and let them know you are an aspiring scout looking for a guide to teach you the ways of the Ranger.
Various tips on beginning:
A good idea starting out as a scout is to visit and rest in Ranger areas such as Trapper's paradise and the noted Sunken tree. It shows a great deal of motivation and enthusiasm in comparsion to whispering a guide. Also look out for any Ranger events, and participate in them as best you can.
Do not pester a guide with questions, unless you are face to face and the guide is listening to you. It would be a good idea to send a letter with your questions if you have many.
When you feel a guide has forgotten you, please let them know you are available for conversation, and will be patient until they have time to anwser your questions.
Do not, I repeat, -do not- send requests to multiple guides to be taught in the ways of the Ranger. It is extremely frustrating to find a scout on two guide's lists.
Get to know Rangers, even if you are only sharing a conversation, it helps to be welcomed to the Rangers by people you already know. Good input from Walkers and other guides is a huge plus too.
Proving yourself:
----------------------
Here's how it works:
You ask a guide to guide you. Guide doesn't know you well, and asks for a history so that he can trust you with trials. Trials prove yourself to the Ranger guild so that you can be recognized as a true Ranger, one can be shown home. Trials can be anywhere between 3 and 15. Trials will test your abilities as a Ranger, your personality, your character, and all other things deemed worthy to test by the guide.
Tips on Trials:
Don't ask how many more trials you have left, it shows a lot of impatience.
Do be enthusiastic, no guide wants to hear you complain about the difficulty of your trials. Do not be enthuisastic enough to constantly ask for a trial though... be patient.
Do each trial carefully.. take your time. Guides do not like seeing a trial come back in less then a few hours. Not only is it exhausting, but it shows impatience on the scout's part.
Trials are not the only the only way you will find yourself a Ranger. Many times a Guide will like to spend a some time teaching an important lesson. Listen carefully and ask questions.
The end:
----------------------
There will likely be a final test or interview. Ask your guide beforehand, after he has mentioned you have completed your trials, if you need any additional preparation, and what to expect.
Be courteous and friendly, and you will have no trouble at all. =)
